Okajima had been out since August 6 with a right hamstring strain. Before the setback, he was 4-3 with a 5.85 earned-run average in 40 games this season. The lefty has surrendered 49 hits and 15 walks in just 32 1/3 innings.

The Sox opened up a roster spot by optioning pitcher Michael Bowden to Triple-A Pawtucket. Bowden made three appearances after being recalled on August 14.
